Golf, while generally considered a low-impact sport, can lead to a range of injuries due to repetitive motions, overuse, and improper technique. Here are the seven most common golfer’s injuries:

  1. Lower Back Pain: Often caused by the repetitive twisting motion of the golf swing, poor posture, or weak core muscles. This is one of the most common injuries among golfers.
  2. Elbow Injuries (Golfer’s Elbow and Tennis Elbow):
    • Golfer’s Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis): Pain and inflammation on the inside of the elbow due to repetitive stress on the forearm muscles.
    • Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis): Though more common in tennis players, this condition affects the outer elbow and can occur in golfers due to similar repetitive stress.
  1. Shoulder Injuries: Injuries like rotator cuff tears, impingement, and bursitis can result from overuse or improper swing mechanics. Repeated swinging can cause strain on the shoulder muscles and tendons.
  2. Wrist Injuries: Tendonitis and wrist sprains are common due to the forceful grip and wrist motion during the swing. The “impact zone” when the club strikes the ball can lead to these injuries.
  3. Knee Pain: Twisting and pivoting movements during the swing can place stress on the knee, leading to ligament injuries, meniscus tears, or worsening of pre-existing knee conditions like arthritis.
  4. Hand and Finger Injuries: These include tendinitis, fractures, or ligament injuries, often caused by gripping the club too tightly or improper hand positioning during a swing.
  5. Hip Injuries: The rotational movement of a golf swing can lead to labral tears, hip bursitis, or muscle strains, particularly if the golfer has poor flexibility or strength in the hip region.

Preventing these injuries involves proper technique, regular strength training, flexibility exercises, and maintaining good posture during play. It can also be beneficial to receive regular muscle and soft tissue maintenance sessions that include the EMMETT technique.
